Murfreesboro is a city in Pike County in the US state of Arkansas . About 1800 people live in an area of ​​around 4.9 square kilometers.

The city is part of the Ark-La-Tex socio-economic region , which includes several cities and towns in the states of Arkansas, Louisiana , Oklahoma, and Texas .

history

The first confirmed residents of what is now the urban area of ​​Murfreesboro were the Indians of the Quapaw and Caddo tribes . A group of explorers around Hernando de Soto were the first to reach the area in the mid-16th century. The clash between the two parties ended violently.

After Pike County was founded in 1833 , the area was given the name Zebulon . It was still dominated by wilderness. In the following years the name was changed to Murfreesborough and finally to the current name. The name was introduced by settlers who named the area after their hometown in Tennessee . Agriculture developed early on.

In 1906 John Wesley Huddleston found the first diamonds in this field. In 1924, Uncle Sam , the largest 40.23 carat diamond ever found in the United States , was recovered from what is now State Park . In the late 1920s, John William Anthony brought his Anthony Lumber Company to Murfreesboro, which became the premier employer and industrial company there. His sawmill became one of the largest in the south of the state.

In 1951 the Narrows Dam was completed, a small dam that from then on formed Lake Greeson .

At the 2000 census , there were 1,764 people in the city, spread across 732 households and 485 families. The population density was about 350 people per square kilometer. 89.2% of the population were white, 7.3% black, 1.4% Hispanic or Latin American, 1.1% Native American, and 0.1% Asian. 0.9% came from a different ethnicity, 1.4% had two or more ethnicities. The median age was 40 and the per capita income was more than $ 17,100.

Worth seeing

The Crater of Diamonds State Park , a park with the eighth largest diamond mine in the world, is located south of the city. There is also the over 1000 year old Indian village of Ka-Do-Ha in Murfreesboro.
