Little Bay

Little Bay ( German  small bay ) is a planned capital under construction on the Caribbean island of Montserrat , an overseas territory of the United Kingdom and part of the Lesser Antilles . The city is the designated capital of the overseas territory. It is located near the current de facto capital Brades on the Little Bay of the same name .

The capital is said to have a size of almost 95 hectares .

background

After the southern part of the island, including the long-standing capital of Montserrats, Plymouth , was devastated by an eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano in 1997 and the city was almost completely destroyed, this was declared a restricted area and the institutions of the state were moved to the city of Brades in the north in 1998 . After the completion of the construction of the town of Little Bay, which is only a few kilometers from Brades, it will also be legally designated as the new capital of Montserrat; until then it will be Plymouth.

construction

The development of Little Bay is supported not only by the government of Montserrat but also by the British Ministry of Development. In 2012, the government decided on a plan for the development, including the construction of a new port that will be able to handle ships up to 300 meters in size. According to the will of the island state, this should also benefit cruise ship traffic. The total volume is estimated to be at least 200 million US dollars , about half of which is attributable to the port. In 2013, work began on preparing the construction area for construction. Construction of the port began in May 2019.
