Johann Jakob Hill

Johann Jakob Hill (born November 3, 1730 in Nieder-Ramstadt , † April 18, 1801 in Marksburg near Braubach ) was a Hessian engineer and architect of the 18th and 19th centuries.

life and work

Johann Jakob Hill received his training in surveying ; and for seven years as an architect by chief engineer Karger.

Hill was allowed to work as a surveyor since 1750 . Hill was made an engineer in 1761 and an engineer lieutenant four years later .

Repeated clashes with court architect Philipp Mann and Johann Martin Schuhknecht led to his dismissal in 1772.

After Mann left and Minister of State Friedrich Carl von Moser was dismissed , Hill tried to rehabilitate .

In 1785 he was transferred as commandant to the Marksburg fort, which belongs to Hessen-Darmstadt, high above Braubach am Rhein , where he stayed until his death.

His works include the building of Braunsardt Castle , the intensive cooperation in the planning and construction of the parade house, the drawing up of a plan for the western suburb.

The plan for the western suburb was later implemented in a simplified form by Georg Moller .

Hill was best known for the "Prospect of the Prince's Residence Palace and Capital Darmstadt together with Bessungen and the surrounding situation" (in short: "Hillsche Prospect"), which he drew with the help of his artistically gifted son Friedrich Jakob Hill .

The "Hillsche Prospect" is a view of the city, with the production of which Princess Wilhelmine (1755–1776), daughter of Ludwig IX. and wife of the Russian heir to the throne Paul .

This cityscape named after him can be found in almost every representation of Darmstadt's history .
