Friedrich Jakob Hill received his first artistic instruction from his father, the engineer Johann Jakob Hill (1730–1801), whom he helped with his architectural and topographical work. Hill is considered to be the co-author of the so-called "Hill's Prospectus".

Little is known about his training. Hill presumably apprenticed to the court painter Johann Ludwig Strecker . After his apprenticeship, he probably received an academic education and training a. a. in Paris , as evidenced by a number of nude studies and architectural sketches with French influence. There is evidence that he stayed in the Palatinate residence of Mannheim. Another trace can be found in the register of Johann Wilhelm Kekulé in Braubach. In Darmstadt , Hill worked primarily as a portrait and miniature painter . He mainly painted watercolors and on ivory.

Between the artist and the sons of Landgrave Ludwig IX. is said to have had a friendly relationship at a young age. In 1799 he was appointed court painter in Darmstadt . The princely family and members of the court were among his main clients. In 1823 Hills was appointed councilor . The Grand Duke of Hesse owned a sketchbook with portraits of members of the court and court society.

Works by Hill are among others in the miniature collection at Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen , these are two miniatures by Marie von Hessen-Kassel . The Royal Collection at Windsor Castle contains a watercolor miniature signed by Hill on ivory by Princess Luise of Nassau-Usingen (1763–1845).
