Mark Pieth

Mark Pieth (born March 9, 1953 in Basel ) is a Swiss legal scholar and anti-corruption expert.

After studying law in Basel, he first worked for a few years in the Swiss Federal Office of Justice. Since 1993 he has been a full professor for criminal law and criminology at the University of Basel . In 2004 he worked on the Volcker Commission in connection with the oil-for-food program . From 1989 to 2013 he was chairman of the OECD working group on combating corruption.

From 2011 to 2013 he was Chairman of the Independent Governance Committee at FIFA . One of the tasks of this committee was to reform FIFA and give it more credibility. Pieth accused numerous high-ranking officials of massively hindering the renewal of FIFA.

From April to the beginning of August 2016, Pieth was a member of a panel of experts set up by the Panamanian government to develop proposals for improved transparency of the country's financial and legal systems following the scandal surrounding the Panama Papers . Together with the head of the committee, Joseph Stiglitz , he withdrew from it in protest on the grounds that the government had tried to restrict the work of the commission.
