T. Jefferson

Jefferson County was formed on November 2, 1829 from parts of Arkansas County and Pulaski County. It was named after the US President Thomas Jefferson .

The district court building, built in 1838, had been used as such until 1976 when it was destroyed by fire.

According to the 2000 census , Jefferson County had 84,278 people in 30,555 households and 21,510 families. The population density was 37 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 48.46 percent white, 49.58 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.66 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.26 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.76 percent were descended from two or more races.
