Howard County was formed on April 17, 1873 from parts of Hempstead County, Pike County, Polk County and Sevier County. It was named after James H. Howard , a senator in Arkansas.
The first district capital was Center Point. In 1905 this became Nashville, as the Arkansas & Louisiana Railroad ran from Nashville to Hope.
One of the first settlers in the area was John Tollett, a Methodist from Bledsoe County , Tennessee , who settled here from 1819. After exploring the area two years earlier, he made all the preparations to move here with several families. In 1819 he arrived with the families and a large number of slaves and settled here. The first sawmill was built in 1825 and the first post office was set up in 1842.
