Taloga is a small town ( Town ) and the county seat in Dewey County ( Oklahoma ).

Taloga is on US Highway 183 , about two kilometers south of the Canadian River . The community area is 1.3 km 2 , it is at an average height of 521 m.

Taloga had 372 residents and 147 households at the 2000 census . 98 families lived in the city. The population density was 287.3 inhabitants / km². There were 185 residential buildings. 94.09% of the population were white , 0.81% African American , 2.69% Native American , 1.61% other, and 0.81% from two or more populations. Hispanics / Latinos of any population made up 6.18% of the population.

Children under the age of 18 lived in 29.3% of the 147 households and in 59.2% married couples. A single woman lived in 5.4% of households and 33.3% of households were not made up of families. There were singles living in 31.3% and at least one resident was 65 years of age or older in 16.3% of the households. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size 3.1.

In the city, 26.6% of the population were younger than 18, 6.5% between 18 and 24 years old, 27.2% between 25 and 44, 24.7% between 45 and 64 and 15.1% 65 years or older older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 female residents there were 96.8 males. For every 100 female residents who were 18 or older, there were 96.4 males.

The median income of a household was 33,281 US dollars, the median income of a family was 38,750 US dollars. Men had a median income of $ 27,083 compared to $ 21,875 for women. The per capita income averaged $ 16,343. 6.8% of families and 11.5% of the population lived below the poverty line , of which 12.7% were under 18 years of age and 6.5% were 65 years of age or older.

History and economy

After the opening of the Cheyenne - Arapaho - Reserve for non-Indian settlers in April 1892, the settlement was founded. According to the Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture , the city name is of Indian origin and means either "beautiful valley" or "swaying water". In 1898 several hundred people were already living in the city. After the first courthouse (built in 1901), a new courthouse was built in 1925, which was replaced by a new courthouse in 2016 due to its disrepair.

There has been a school in Taloga since 1901, in which 131 students were taught from pre-school to 12th grade in 2005.

In the 1920s, oil development began in the area. The production of oil and gas contributed to the prosperity of the place from the 1950s. There are also several wind farms with a total output of more than 656 MW within 50 kilometers of Taloga: "Crossroads" (228 MW, 40 km or 8 km northeast), "Taloga" (130 MW, 15 km south), "Seiling "And" Seiling 2 "(299 MW, 35 km northeast) Furthermore, agriculture is an important branch of the economy.

Attractions

Behind the courthouse is the Dewey County Jail Museum. The building was used as a prison from 1922 to 1981.

According to the Chronicles of Oklahoma, Volume 3, No. 4 When the settlement was founded in April 1892, almost all members of the "Dalton Gang" registered under false names for the allotment of land.
