history
The area was originally owned by the Cherokee . With the Cherokee Outlet , the government bought large tracts of land from them and released them for settlement. Then the city was founded in 1883 under the name Lamoreaux . This name goes back to Silas W. Lamoreaux, the commissioner responsible for land sales. The new settlers soon renamed the place Santa Fe . However, the railway company Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway did not accept this name, as other places with the same name already existed and they wanted to avoid confusion. Since the small town of Kirk existed nearby at that time , the citizens finally agreed on the name Newkirk, which is still valid today . When searching for an administrative seat in Kay County, Blackwell , Newkirk, and Ponca City were all available. Newkirk was elected with a narrow majority. Newkirk experienced an economic boom at the beginning of the 20th century when oil was found in test wells. Today Newkirk is mainly active in agriculture and tourism.
