action

Jesse, a casual graphic artist , and Celeste, a trend researcher and partner in a marketing agency, have known each other since high school and have been married for six years. Both are now over 30 and notice that their relationship has run out of steam. By mutual agreement, they decide to part ways. Jesse moves into his studio behind his former home. Both try to get to know people and build a new relationship. Nevertheless, they always stay in contact and meet regularly. They are best friends, live next door to each other and talk about everything to each other. However, each of them deals differently with the breakup, and so their meetings sometimes prove difficult, even for their mutual friends. There are always arguments, including whether their separation was really the right move. Although Celeste is a successful business woman who believes she did the right thing, she often has doubts. She would lose a lot with her long-term partner, and it is still difficult for her to let go. Jesse is secretly hoping that his wife will change her mind because he still loves her. This hope is destroyed especially suddenly after a night together with Celeste, when she describes it as a mistake. Jesse travels and ignores calls to Celeste who apologize to him. Jesse starts a new relationship with Veronica, with whom he had a one-night stand a few months ago after the breakup. After Jesse tells Celeste about Veronica's pregnancy, she tries harder to break away from Jesse. She meets with several men but realizes that she is still attached to Jesse and the breakup was a mistake. She asks Jesse if he would be ready to get back with her. The conversation ends in an argument. They both meet again at a friends wedding. Celeste's appreciative toast reconciles Jesse with her. As a result, Celeste also brings the motivation to move forward with the divorce. When they sign the divorce papers they are good friends again, cracking insider jokes . She asks him if he loves Veronica, who says yes. Celeste wishes him all the best and that he will fight for his new love. They part with one last kiss.

Reviews

The Spiegel judges Celeste & Jesse as "a clever, light-footed love comedy about big city neurotics, which, especially in the witty dialogues, achieves the weird charm of the role model Woody Allen." The charming comedy does not shy away from "the audience feeling the melancholy of lovesickness." allow. So it leads to a bittersweet happy ending that surprises - and once again sets it apart from the mendacious chirping of love from other romantic comedies ”.

Kino.de also assesses Celeste & Jesse as "an extremely charming declaration of war on the matter of course" and regards it as "a very entertaining forum for the comic and dramatic qualities of Rashida Jones, which Hollywood has previously hidden in supporting roles".
