Penelope is a US-American - British film comedy by Mark Palansky from the year 2006 .

action

Penelope suffers from the fact that from birth she has a nose that looks like a pig's trunk. She owes this nose to the curse of a witch . It can only be lifted if someone “of her blood” loves Penelope for who she is - a nobleman as they say. Penelope's mother hires a matchmaker who introduces Penelope to noble lords. However, these flee at first sight. In order to protect Penelope from the public and the press, the marriage candidates have to sign a confidentiality agreement.

Two of these candidates are particularly at the center of the story: Edward Vanderman, who makes a fool of himself in front of the press with the as yet unknown story of a "monster" and then sends in another candidate named Max (actually Johnny) to take a photo evidence of Penelope to let. Max falls in love with Penelope, but cannot lift the curse as he is not a nobleman and eventually escapes.

Over time, Penelope finds it increasingly difficult to hide and secretly ventures into town. In order not to be recognized, she wears a scarf in front of her face all the time. Her parents find her when she passed out and had to go to the hospital.

Meanwhile, the world also knows about Penelope and so she can fearlessly roam the city without having to veil herself.

Since Edward has made a fool of himself in public, he is forced by his father to marry Penelope. Shortly before saying yes, Penelope changed her mind. She realizes that she likes herself for who she is. With this knowledge, she herself releases the curse. She leaves her parents' home and becomes a teacher. At a Halloween party, she smuggles into Johnny's apartment in disguise. However, he recognizes her and kisses her. They then decide to stay together.

Reviews

Kirk Honeycutt praised the " skillful " direction of the " clever " " modern fairy tale " in the Hollywood Reporter of September 15, 2006 . Penelope's real problem is her " overprotective " parents. Honeycutt praised the performances by Christina Ricci, Catherine O'Hara, Richard E. Grant, Simon Woods, and Peter Dinklage.

“The colorful and playful staging of the modern fairy tale shows dedication. The viewer dreams his way through a fantastic world full of cotton candy and soap bubbles with Penelope and is always bedded on a velvet feel-good pillow. The obvious criticism of the beauty craze does not come as a moral club, but as a tickling index finger that makes us smile. Conclusion A romantic fairy tale with a current reference that lives mainly from its fantastic atmosphere. "

"The lovable fun in the style of Tim Burton's " Edward Scissorhands "is well cast down to the smallest roles. The bizarre " The Ugly Duckling " version also delights with black humor and weird dialogues. Very strong! "

“Perhaps Mark Palansky is sometimes applying too thickly and making his modern film fairy tale too sweet. But somehow Christina Ricci as “Penelope” conquered the hearts of the romantically inclined spectators in the pig gallop, so that despite the icing, you don't get a toothache. All of this qualifies “Penelope” as a lovable film for rainy days. Palansky's film debut is a big plus with his selection of music. Because at the latest when Sigur Rós ' grandiose "Hoppípolla" introduces the euphoric finale, it is clear that the young director has a dazzling taste in music, which allows the images and the songs to merge in harmony.
