Madagascar - A Travel Journal is a French animated short film directed by Bastien Dubois in 2009.

action

A travel diary is opened, followed by impressions of everyday life in Madagascar . A man meets a local in a bar who invites him to attend the Famadihana festival, which his aunt organizes. The man agrees and is given the address of a small village. He sets off in an intercity bus and reaches the place where he is greeted by his friend.

Famadihana is traditionally prepared, music is played and high-proof Toka Gasy rum is drunk with rice with pork. The newly dressed corpse is now brought to the grave. In the crowd, the narrator, from whose point of view the plot is seen, apparently passes out. When he wakes up, he hears the people singing the Malagasy national anthem. Famadihana is coming to an end and one bids farewell to the dead.

Further impressions of the country follow: The soccer game, large families, the forests and lakes, the municipality of Katsepy, the steppes, the sea, the mountains, the big cities and finally the flight home with a last bird's eye view of the island - the travel diary is closed.

production

Director Bastien Dubois had the idea for the film in December 2004 when he decided to later implement his trip to Madagascar in the form of an animated travel diary. During his one-year stay in Madagascar, Dubois recorded travel impressions in a real diary. Back in Paris , work began on the film, which took between three and four years to complete and ended in 2009. Among other things, Dubois traveled to Madagascar in December 2009 and showed the film to the villagers who had taken part in the Famadihana shown in the film.

The film combines numerous different animation techniques. Parts are realized in water color, others in embroidery, still others appear as 3D animation or consist of filmed objects on an animated background: “There are 150 different settings in the film and I tried to use as many different techniques as possible with the most varied To use tools and pens, ”Dubois said in an interview.

Awards

Madagascar - A travel diary was nominated for an Oscar in the category “ Best Animated Short Film ” in 2011 , but could not prevail against The Lost Thing .
