Tanel Toom

Tanel Toom (born November 1, 1982 in Rae , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian director. His short film The Confession (2010) was nominated for an Oscar in 2011 .

Life

Tanel Toom studied film at Tallinn University , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . He made several short films, with his war drama Teine Tulemine premiering at the Venice International Film Festival . He continued his master's degree at the National Film and Television School in Beaconsfield , England. His graduation film there was The Confession . The film won the Student Academy Award in the “Best Foreign Film” category. In 2011 the film was nominated for an Oscar for " Best Short Film ", but lost to God of Love .

Tõde ja õigus ( Truth and justice ), Toom's 2019 film adaptation of the novel pentalogy of the same name by Anton Hansen Tammsaare , was selected as the Estonian entry for the 2020 Oscars in the category Best International Film , and made it into the shortlist in December 2019 ) of ten films.
