action

Simon is 18 years old and lives with his parents in a small Swedish town. He is autistic with Asperger's Syndrome . Again and again he hides in an old washtub, reminiscent of a garbage can or a space capsule. He claims that then he would be in space where there are no feelings. He drives his parents to despair until they turn to their eldest son Sam. They ask him to take care of Simon in the future because he still has the best access to him. From then on, Simon lives with his brother and his girlfriend Frida.

Simon tries to organize his everyday life according to strict rules, rites and patterns. He only dresses in certain colors, only eats rounded slices of toast and round vegetables because he doesn't like square things and can't stand being touched. He's getting on Frida’s nerves. Finally Frida moves out and ends her relationship with Sam, because he doesn't want to let his brother out.

Simon sees the order in his life disturbed and tries to persuade Frida to return. When that doesn't work, Simon sets out to find a new girlfriend for his brother. With a meticulously elaborated questionnaire, he is looking for the perfect girl for Sam. He has to find out, however, that absolute agreement of interests is not attractive for Sam, but rather that he seeks the opposite.

So Simon tries to get in touch with Jennifer, the girl who most disagrees with Sam. Jennifer is amused by Simon's behavior, so she not only spends the day with him, but also invites him to her apartment. Again and again he has to point out to Jennifer that he cannot bear physical contact.

Although his behavior sometimes seems bizarre, she treats Simon kindly and explains things to him in a way that he can understand. After a game night with her friends, Simon manages to get her to promise to meet Sam.

Sam, who has been desperately looking for Simon all day, is not at all enthusiastic about it. It comes to an argument and Sam furiously yells at his brother, he should stay out of his life. This affects Simon so emotionally that he hides back in his space capsule, where there are no feelings.

The next morning he sets out to straighten things out. He asks all of his friends for help. They kidnap Sam and take him to a romantic dinner with Jennifer against his will. Simon organized wine, flowers, food, music and candles. Sam has absolutely no desire to be forced to do anything. Jennifer, on the other hand, is absolutely thrilled with what Simon has come up with.

After Simon notices that neither of them fall in love, he runs away again and hides in his small space capsule. He can't understand that Sam just wants to be friends with Jennifer and thinks they won't see each other anymore. Finally Jennifer joins them, opens the space capsule and speaks to Simon. Without realizing it, she touches his hand. When he finally notices it, he still allows it to continue.

When Jennifer looks him in the eye, he smiles for the first time.

There are no feelings in space is not only the “most charming and safest Swedish comedy” that he has seen in a long time, said Hynek Pallas in the Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet , it also shines above all with “solid craftsmanship” and interesting “graphics” Solutions". He also particularly praised "the ideal film couple" Cecilia Forss and Bill Skarsgård , because while he "delivered his precise sentences as ordered", they could convince as a "chaotic whirlwind".

One could in space there are no feelings not only for "applaud that one [Asperger's syndrome] in a fun comedy" presenting, Helena Lindblad said in the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter , one must after this "soft-hearted and imaginative [Film] even find that it couldn't have been done better ". This was mainly due to the selected music and the visual style, which is very reminiscent of The Royal Tenenbaums .

In the Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet , Jan-Olov Andersson praised the “always better original plot that doesn't look a bit like a low budget”. And even before the “warm, funny and emotional” film received four nominations for the Swedish Guldbagge Film Award , Andersson predicted that he would be one of the best candidates for it.

In the Swedish tabloid Expressen , Mats Bråstedt praised the fact that Andreas Öhman, with his directorial debut and “his limited financial resources, presented an imaginative cosmos full of freshness”. One could even go so far that with the film adaptation of his own short story he would have delivered a directing performance that could be equated with Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Wes Anderson .
