The decision: capitalism vs. Climate (English This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate ) is a non-fiction book critical of globalization by the Canadian journalist Naomi Klein . It was initially published in English in 2014; the second edition in German appeared in 2016.

content

In The Decision, Naomi Klein analyzes the contradictions between the capitalist economic system and climate protection . She does not locate the problem in the emission of greenhouse gases , but asks the system question, without which a climate crisis can no longer be avoided. It calls for a radical rethink and presents inspiring alternatives.

In the book, Klein presents her opinion that the climate crisis cannot be resolved in a neoliberal system that encourages disproportionate consumption and has led to megafusions and trade deals that are detrimental to the state of the environment. She examines the discourses of climate change and the many conflicts of interest that underlie the political sphere. It harks back to the ambiguous role played by several billionaires posing as saviors of the planet but in reality continuing to support polluting companies, most notably Richard Branson . To highlight possible solutions, she insists on the important role of the First Nations in the fight for the climate and calls for a better articulation of the global struggles, in which she argues that for them the fight for the climate, against banks, for the inclusion of Migrants or for press freedom are indeed facets of the same struggle.

Receptions

The book debuted at number 5 on the New York Times bestseller list in October 2014.

The book won the Hilary Weston Writers' Trust Prize for Nonfiction in 2014 , and was shortlisted for the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize for Political Writing in 2015 .

“Sometimes allegro furioso , sometimes con dolore , the Canadian tells how nature and people from Bangladesh to Bolivia suffer from ' extractivism ', the plundering of fossil raw materials and their consequences. She explores the question most intensively: Why has it not been possible to avert a danger that has been on the agenda since 1988 at the latest (since the then NASA researcher James Hansen saw the changes in the climate in the American Congress for Human Work), neither in the USA nor worldwide explained)? "

- Christiane Grefe, Die Zeit, March 12, 2015

“The climate has its back to the wall. Klein, who herself has long ignored climate change , as she admits, is calling for new trade law and a basic income for everyone. She wants to gather allies - 'because only a new mass social movement can save us now'. The book is a passionate plea that wants to wake up the silent majority. 'I just know that nothing is inevitable. Except for the fact that climate change will change everything. And for a very short time, we still have the nature of this change in our own hands. '"
