Fräulein Julie (original title: Miss Julie ) is a film by Liv Ullmann based on the play of the same name by August Strindberg . Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell play the leading roles . The film premiered on September 7, 2014 at the Toronto International Film Festival . The cinema release in Germany was on January 22, 2015.

Ireland 1890: Miss Julie, a young noblewoman, lives with her father in a rural property in Fermanagh . On midsummer night she tries to seduce her father's house servant, John, in order to escape her everyday life as the daughter of a count and break up her life, which is dominated by social norms. She begins to explore the boundaries of class and wants to win over John against the fact that he is already engaged to Kathleen. In the absence of her father, a battle of the sexes and a psychological game for power, desire and seduction unfold.
criticism
The film service judges: “The film adaptation of August Strindberg's play of the same name is a classic adaptation without any new interpretive approaches and remains conventional and schematic in terms of film language. The main actress is impressed by the emotional tour de force, but overall the film lacks a new perspective on the subject. "
Awards
The two main actors Jessica Chastain and Colin Farrell received several nominations for their performance, including Chastain at the Critics 'Choice Movie Award and from the Central Ohio Film Critics Association (each also for other films) and Farrell at the Norwegian Film Awards Amanda and the London Critics' Circle Film award . Both received nominations at the Irish Film and Television Awards, as did costume designer Consolata Boyle .
