Dame Siân Phillips DBE (born May 14, 1934 in Betws , Carmarthenshire , Wales ; actually Jane Elizabeth Ailwen Phillips ) is a British actress .

Life

Phillips comes from a Welsh family. Her mother was a teacher before her wedding. The father worked as a steel worker and later as a police officer. At the age of eleven, Phillips appeared on the radio and acted. She attended Cardiff University and studied English and Philosophy. She worked as a news anchor for the BBC . At the age of 21 she received a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London . This traditional drama school awarded her the Bancroft Gold Medal . In 1957, Phillips made her theater debut in London in the play Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen . Phillips was married to Don Roy from 1956 to 1960 and to actor Peter O'Toole from 1959 to 1979 . The latter relationship resulted in the daughters Pat and Kate . The marriage ended in divorce as well as a later one with the British actor Robin Sachs , with whom she was married from 1979 to 1991. Phillips lived in Ireland for a while and later in London.

Phillips has made many feature films and television films during her career, but is best known for her role as Livia in the BBC adaptation of Robert Graves ' novel Ich, Claudius, Kaiser und Gott (1976). She also played "Ann", the unfaithful wife of Alec Guinness as " George Smiley ", in the television adaptations of the spy novels Lady, King, As, Spy ( Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, 1979) and Smileys People, or Agent in their own right Thing ( Smiley's People, 1982) based on books by John le Carré . Moviegoers know them from the science fiction film Der Wüstenplanet ( Dune , 1984) by director David Lynch . On stage, Phillips u. a. in London Marlene Dietrich in Pam Gems ' Marlene - a Tribute to Dietrich (1997). For this role on Broadway , she was nominated for a Tony Award .

In 1999 and 2001 Siân Phillips published her autobiography in two volumes ( Public Places and Private Faces ) . She also sings and has released several CDs, including And So It Goes .

Phillips is an active member of Social, Welsh and Sexy Welsh Personalities and also speaks the Welsh language . (In her autobiography she states that as a child she learned Welsh earlier than English .) The first name Siân is the Welsh form of her actual name Jane . Phillips adopted it when she began acting in the Welsh language.

Awards

In 1970 the National Society of Film Critics honored her for Goodbye, Mr. Chips for Best Supporting Actress . For this film, it was 1970, at the Golden Globes as Best Supporting Actress nomination. In 1977 she won the BAFTA Award for Best Actress for Ich, Claudius, Kaiser und Gott . In 1977 she received the RTS Television Award from the Royal Television Society, UK, for this film . In 2001 she received the Special Award at the Welsh BAFTA Awards .

In June 2000 she was awarded the title of Commander of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II . At the 2016 New Year ceremony, Phillips was raised by Queen Elizabeth II to Lady Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE).
