Betws

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Betws (pronunciation: [ˈbɛtuːs] ) is a village in Carmarthenshire , Wales , United Kingdom (not to be confused with Betws-y-Coed in Gwynedd ).

Betws is on the Amman River; on the opposite bank of the river to the north lies the town of Ammanford , to which Betws was temporarily part. The southern border of Betws (the River Cathan) also formed the border between Glamorgan and Carmarthenshire . Grave finds show that the area around Betws was already settled in the Bronze Age.

The mountain Mynydd y Betws (371 m) rises above the place . Like many places in the region, Betws was shaped by the coal industry for many years , at times there were up to seven mines ; In addition to coal, iron and tin sheets were also delivered from here to the industrial cities. Yet the village has never lost its rural character. Today there are plans to build wind turbines on the mountain , which is met with fierce opposition from nature conservationists.

Well-known people who were born or raised in Betws are the actress Siân Phillips and the singer Donald Peers .
