Eileen Mary Ure (born February 18, 1933 in Glasgow , Scotland , † April 3, 1975 in London , England ) was a Scottish film and theater actress and model .

Life

Mary Ure - her real first name Eileen , she gave up as an adult - grew up in the city of her birth, Glasgow, where she studied at an acting school. She later moved to London and continued her education at the well-known Central School of Speech and Drama . To finance her studies, but also in the course of her further career, Ure often stood in front of the camera as a photo model.

Ure began her career at London's theaters, where they, among other things in the play Look Back in Anger ( Look Back in Anger ) by British playwright John Osborne had great success. Although Osborne was married at the time, the two began a relationship that led to Osborne's divorce from his wife first and then to Mary Ure in 1957.

A year later, in 1958, Ure moved to New York City to get her first engagements on Broadway with the help of her husband . In 1958 she received the Tony Award for her Broadway interpretation of Blick zurück im Zorn . Mary Ure was also hired to film the play in 1958 by director Tony Richardson . The film adaptation received a Golden Globe Award nomination in 1959 . In 1960 it was for the film drama Sons and Lovers ( Sons and Lovers ) by Jack Cardiff on camera and was for a 1961 Oscar as Best Supporting Actress nomination.

In 1959, Ure entered into a relationship with actor Robert Shaw . The resulting love triangle, which lasted until Ure's divorce from Osborne in 1963, was complicated by the fact that Ure had two children with Osborne. In 1963 Ure married Robert Shaw, who is now pregnant. His ex-wife, Jennifer Bourke, was also expecting a child. In the years that followed, Ure had four more children from Shaw and was mainly wife and mother in the following years. Her further career was then limited to supporting roles in war films and westerns.

Ure fell ill with depression and became alcoholic . Although she was offered roles in some plays in London, her artistic performance and popularity were marred by her increasing alcohol consumption. One evening in April 1975, she committed suicide by drinking alcohol and taking barbiturates . According to another version, her death is said to have occurred unintentionally.
