action
The young, idealistic journalist Adam White applies for a job with the Chronicle. The cynical editor Shrike wants to convince Adam of the wickedness of the world and of humans by having him edit the column "Miss Lonely Heart". This is where people looking for help turn to the newspaper. Shrike, embittered that his wife cheated on him, assumes that Adam will lose his utopian worldview. He urges Adam to meet the scribe Fay Doyle. She seduces Adam, which plunges him into deep conflict. He confesses the slip up to his girlfriend and also confesses his own life lie : He is not an orphan , as claimed, but his father is in prison for the murder of Adam's mother.
background
