Hermione Ferdinanda Gingold (born December 9, 1897 in London , † May 24, 1987 in New York City ) was a British actress .

The daughter of an Austrian and an Englishwoman made her stage debut in 1908 at His Majesty's Theater in the play Pinkie and the Fairies . She played, among others, Jessica in The Merchant of Venice and Cassandra in Troilus and Cressida . In the 1930s she developed more and more into a spirited, comedic performer on revue and music stages in London and New York.

She embodied talkative mothers, mothers-in-law, grandmothers, ladies of the world, matchmakers and puff mothers. Her film roles were of the same type. For her role as Madame Alvarez in the musical adaptation Gigi with Leslie Caron , she received a Golden Globe Award for best supporting actress in 1959 .

She was married from 1926 to 1940 (according to other sources: until 1945; divorce) to the British entertainer, author and television producer Albert Eric Maschwitz.
