Marjorie Main
Marjorie Main (born February 24, 1890 in Acton , Indiana , † April 10, 1975 in Los Angeles , California ; actually Mary Tomlinson ) was an American actress .
life and career
Marjorie Main began her career with appearances in vaudeville and with various touring companies. She made the leap to Broadway and from 1932 to film. At first her roles were rather small, but from the mid-1930s she was able to establish herself as a popular supporting actress. For her portrayal as the desperate mother of Humphrey Bogart in Sackgasse , she received excellent reviews, but was then seen mostly as a member of the lower class, who sacrificed themselves to offer the children a better life. It was only when she switched to MGM in the early 1940s that she succeeded in switching to the comedic field. At the side of Wallace Beery , Main starred in a number of very successful films, where she embodied resolute and sharp-tongued women. She had one of her most famous appearances as housekeeper in the classic musical Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) directed by Vincente Minnelli .
In 1947 she played the character of Ma Kettle , a rough farmer with a heart of gold, in the film comedy The Egg and Me at the side of Claudette Colbert . For this role, she was on the Academy Awards 1948 as Best Supporting Actress nomination. The Egg and I grossed almost $ 5 million, and Universal Pictures turned the characters of Ma and Pa Kettle , played by Main and Percy Kilbride , into the heroes of a separate series of nine feature films. After the end of the film series, Main retired into private life in 1957.
Marjorie Main died in 1975 at the age of 85. She was married to the well-known psychiatrist Stanley LeFevre Krebs (1864-1935) from 1921 until his death .
