Acton is a small town in the southeast corner of Marion County , Indiana . It is part of the city of Indianapolis . The place was named after a general Acton.

Former names

Acton was called Farmersville until 1854 . It was renamed in 1854 after the US postal service found out that there was already a town called Farmersville in Posey County .

history

Acton was once a busy city. At that time there was a blacksmith, a pharmacy, a bank, a telephone exchange, two grocery stores, a locomotive shed, a post office, a school, three churches, three gas stations, a car salesman and even two grain elevators .

One of the grocery stores was the Knights of Pythias building , which was on Exchange Street . It was next to the railroad tracks. However, it was destroyed in a fire in 1962. A new building was built in 1967. The second store is no longer in use, but is still on the corner of Swails Street and McGregor Road .

The forge was owned by Virgil Russell , who stepped down from forging in 1970 and sold the shop to Clifford A. (Cookie) Kight in 1977 . To this day, the store is known as the Cookies Auto Body Shop .

The grain elevators were also destroyed in the fire (1973-74). There is now a car repair shop on the former site.

The pharmacy was on the corner of Swails Street and House Street . This area also burned down in 1946 and was not rebuilt. It was in front of the former US Post office building, which was on Exchange Street .

The former car salesman is still standing today and is currently used as Doug McKinney's tree service .

The Acton state bank was next to the post office. In 1924 it was ambushed by three armed men who escaped with $ 3,000 and were never caught. The banker at the time was Ben McCollumn. In 1934 the bank closed its doors and the building was used as a gun shop and restaurant.

There were three gas stations in Acton. One was on the corner of Exchange Street and McGregor Road . Another was on the corner of Acton Road and Virgil Street . The third is still there today, on the corner of Swails Street and Acton Road . It has been owned by Mike Walker since 1982.

Of the three former churches in Acton, only one is now a church. The Acton Baptist Church is located since 1866 in the Exchange Street . Since the church was destroyed in 1927, the building was rebuilt in 1929. In 1962 the "Judson Hall" was added.

From 1875 to the present day the school is in the same place. The original building was a one-story house. It was used until 1912 when a new school with two floors was built. This was in use until 1965. In 1972 new classrooms and a library were added.

In March 1986 a tornado swept over Acton and caused a lot of damage. Although many buildings are over 100 years old, they survived the storm.

Acton has always been called a rural area, but since 2004 there has been a new residential area on the western edge of Acton. It is located between Maze Road and Exchange Street .
