Joyce Redman
Joyce Redman (born December 9, 1918 in County Mayo , Ireland , † May 9, 2012 in Kent , Great Britain ) was an Irish film and theater actress .
Life
Joyce Redman and her three older sisters grew up as the daughters of a British father and an Irish mother in County Mayo, Ireland and were raised by a governess. Joyce Redman completed her training as an actress at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art . Her mentor was Charles Wynne Roberts . Redman made her stage debut on December 23, 1935 at the London Playhouse in a production of Alice Behind the Looking Glass . Three years later she already played the title role in a production of the same play before she went on tour for the first time in March 1939 as Laura in Drawing Room . In May 1943 she enjoyed great success at the Duke of York's theater when she played Brigid in Shadow and Substance . Two months later she replaced Pamela Brown as the title heroine in the London production of Rose Franken's Broadway hit Claudia and went on tour with it from 1943 to 1944.
When she joined the renowned Old Vic Company under Laurence Olivier , she appeared in repertoire pieces such as Henrik Ibsen’s Peer Gynt and William Shakespeare’s Richard III. or Chekhov's uncle Vanya . In July 1945 she made a guest appearance with the theater company at the Comédie-Française , on May 7, 1946 she made her debut on New York Broadway with the role of Doll Tearsheet in Shakespeare's Henry IV, Part 2 . Two years later, she gave the title role as Anne Boleyn in the Broadway premiere of Maxwell Anderson's play Anne of the Thousand Days , with Rex Harrison as Henry VIII.
Redman was offered a wide variety of roles in English theater and she was a member of almost every major repertory group. As a film and television actress, however, she only appeared occasionally. From 1938 to 2001, the red-haired Irish woman was in front of the camera 25 times. Despite the few film roles that she played, she managed to be nominated twice for an Oscar in the category Best Supporting Actress . She received her first nomination in 1964 for her portrayal in Tom Jones - Between Bed and Gallows . Two years later, in 1966, she was nominated for her Emilia in Laurence Olivier's theatrical adaptation of Othello . For the latter, she was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award .
Little was known about her private life. For a few years she owned a small island off the coast of Ireland, which she later sold again. Her niece is the British actress Amanda Redman (* 1957).
