Herman J. Mankiewicz

Herman Jacob Mankiewicz (born November 7, 1897 in New York City , † March 5, 1953 in Hollywood , California ) was an American screenwriter of German origin. He became known for his work on Orson Welles ' Citizen Kane .

Life

Herman Jacob Mankiewicz was the first child of Franz Mankiewicz, who was born in Berlin and emigrated to the USA in 1892, and his wife Johanna Blumenau. He studied at Columbia University and in Berlin. During his time in Germany he began working as a correspondent for the Chicago Tribune ; later he also worked for the New York Times . When he returned to the United States, he began his career on Broadway as a theater critic and then went to Hollywood to work as a screenwriter. He won an Oscar for working with Orson Welles on his film Citizen Kane . Mankiewicz was the older brother of Joseph L. Mankiewicz , his nephew Tom Mankiewicz worked as a screenwriter and director. His son Don Mankiewicz (1922-2015) was also active as a screenwriter.
