Pipe blowing stand

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A pipe blowing stand (washout stand) is a device in a railway depot that is used to blow out the boiler tubes of a steam locomotive . Blowing the pipes using a lance had to be carried out once a week for steam locomotives in order to prevent excessive contamination of the boiler pipes. Deposits in heating and smoke pipes not only reduce the heat transfer from the hot flue gases to the water in the boiler, they also promote corrosion of the pipes.
