Eiko Ishioka
Eiko Ishioka ( Japanese 石 岡 瑛 子 , Ishioka Eiko ; born July 12, 1938 in Tokyo Prefecture ; † January 21, 2012 ibid) was a Japanese designer and costume designer .
life and work
The daughter of a graphic designer completed her art studies at the Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku in 1961 and then worked in the advertising department of the Shiseido cosmetics company . She had been self-employed since the early 1970s and first attracted attention by advertising for the Japanese department store chain Parco.
Together with the cameraman John Bailey and the composer Philip Glass , she received a special prize at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1985 for setting the film Mishima - A Life in Four Chapters . In 1986 the cover of Miles Davis's album Tutu , which she designed, was awarded a Grammy. She received an Oscar for costume design in 1992 for the film Bram Stoker's Dracula by Francis Ford Coppola . In the 2000s, she worked for several years as a costume designer with the film director Tarsem Singh . On Broadway, Ishioka designed the sets and costumes for the play M. Butterfly by David Henry Hwang and most recently the costumes for the musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark .
In 1998 she designed the costumes and props for the opera production Der Ring des Nibelungen under the musical direction of Hartmut Haenchen and directed by Pierre Audi , set by Georg Tsypin. The production was shown until 2014 and captured both on DVD and on stream.
At the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympics , members of the teams in Switzerland, Canada, Japan and Spain wore clothing designed by her. Ishioka was also responsible for the costumes for the opening ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.
Ishioka directed Björk's music video Cocoon (2002) and designed the costumes for Grace Jones' Hurricane Tour (2009).
In January 2013 she was posthumously nominated for an Oscar for the film Mirror Mirror - The Truly True Story of Snow White .
