occupation

The call of the whales (original title Big Miracle ) is an American drama from 2012 . It is about the rescue of gray whales in the Beaufort Sea north of the Point Barrow headland and takes place in 1988. The film is based on a true story that is described in the book Freeing the Whales as Operation Breakthrough .

action

The reporter Adam Carlson wants nothing more than to turn his back on the northernmost city in the USA, Barrow in northern Alaska , in order to finally work somewhere else as a real journalist. Unexpectedly, however, he stumbled upon the “hit” of his life: When the Beaufort Sea freezes over very quickly in October after a short summer, a family of gray whales was trapped in the ice and access to the open sea was cut off. The fate of animals becomes a worldwide media event. Soon several factions, some of which are hostile, are involved in the events: Iñupiat , whalers, ambitious reporters, the National Guard, politicians, the US president, the governor, an oil tycoon. There is even a confrontation between the American and Soviet governments who want to take on the task of saving the whales. But nobody causes Adam greater problems than his ex-girlfriend Rachel Kramer, a combative Greenpeace activist who pulls out all the stops to save the whales. At some point the ice broke through everyone's exertion and the adult whales Fred and Wilma managed to escape, but the whale baby Bamm-Bamm no longer appeared.

production

In April 2009, Warner Bros. bought the script from Jack Amiel and Michael Begler and Ken Kwapis was hired as a director the following June. In September 2010, after Drew Barrymore as Rachel Kramer - based on the character of the real-life Greepeace activist Cindy Lowry - and John Krasinski as the leading roles, filming began in Seward . With a budget of 30 to 40 million US dollars , the production with the working title Everybody Loves Whales was shot in 10 weeks. The crew constructed the set in Anchorage and rebuilt it in Barrow.

Trivia

The governor Sarah Palin appears as herself under her maiden name Sarah Heath as a sports announcer in the studio of Channel2 News (approx. 98. min).

During the credits, the real actors from 1988 are contrasted with their actors. Drew Barrymore meets Cindy Lowdry, Dermot Mulroney meets the footage of the real National Guard Colonel. Even Mulroney and Vinessa Shaw's wedding in their roles is shown alongside the real one.

The fast food chain Burger King advertised the film with toys (including bamm-bamm as a doll).

Reviews

The film magazine Cinema writes: “ The call of the whales shows what is possible when people overcome their conflicting beliefs and unite for a common goal. But under this conciliatory surface, the film certainly provides exciting food for thought. "

The German film and media rating awarded the film the rating “valuable” and wrote in its explanation: “Even if the hairstyles are still too perfect in the context of the rescue operations and the animation of the whales becomes conspicuous towards the end, the film has overall an undeniable and skilfully staged sentiment as well as an attractive entertainment value, which the jury was able to recognize as "valuable". "

At Rotten Tomatoes, the film received 74% based on 95 reviews. Metacritic got a score of 61 based on 28 queries.

Additionally, the call of the whales won the Genesis Award in 2013 .
