action

John Farley was fat as a child, which is why his PE teacher Jasper Woodcock made life difficult for him - like most of his classmates. The adult Farley learns that his widowed mother Beverly is in a relationship with Woodcock. Beverly wants to marry Woodcock, which outrages her son.

John tries to make friends with his future stepfather and accompanies him all day. In a retirement home, he meets Woodcock's father, whose character is rotten through and through. Woodcock trains with the elderly in the swimming pool, but an elderly man remains in a wheelchair at the edge of the pool and does not react to Woodcock's offer to go into the water. This feels ridiculed and unceremoniously throws him into the pool. John wants to save the man from drowning; however, it turns out that the man can swim. While trying to rescue him, he is knocked unconscious by the man. John himself is pulled out of the pool and artificially ventilated. To find evidence that Woodcock is not the right husband, John seeks out Woodcock's ex.

At the fair, the two of them have a few competitions, Woodcock can win in the corn-on-the-cob contest even as a loser, because John ends his satisfaction in defeating Mr. Woodcock in an embarrassing jubilation. When Woodcock is voted Teacher of the Year, John is too much. He can't believe everyone in the room likes Woodcock. When John is at the lectern, he takes the opportunity to scold Woodcock. This does not meet with any approval from the audience present. Of course, John's mother is mad at him now too.

In a TV show to promote his new book, he leaves the show in front of the cameras to smooth things over again. A clarifying conversation with Woodcock ends in a wrestling match in which Woodcock is seriously injured. On the way to the hospital, the two wrestlers get closer and John realizes that Woodcock might be the right one for his mother after all. John brings Woodcock to Beverly and Woodcock on a wheeled stretcher, and they make up again. At Christmas, John Farley publishes his new book "Backbone".

Reviews

Justin Chang derided in Variety magazine on Sept. 13, 2007 that repeating the word Woodcock was funnier than this movie. The portrayal of Billy Bob Thornton makes the result a little better.
