Broken City ( German  kaputte Stadt , alternative title: Broken City - Stadt des Verbrechens ) is an American crime thriller from 2013 by director Allen Hughes , with Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe in the leading roles.

action

New York cop Billy Taggart is on trial for the murder of Mikey Tavarez. Tavarez had raped and killed his friend Natalie Barrow's sixteen-year-old sister. Taggart's friend, Captain Carl Fairbanks, turns to Mayor Nicholas Hostetler for help. Hostetler removes the evidence against Taggart. Tavarez's death is classified by the court as a result of self-defense. However, Taggart is forced by the police chief and the mayor to quit his service with the police.

Seven years later. Taggart is now a private investigator and is on the verge of bankruptcy. In this situation, Mayor Hostetler provides him with an assignment: Taggart is to find out with whom Hostetler's wife Cathleen is having an affair. Taggart will be assisted by his assistant Katy Bradshaw in completing the contract. Together they find out that Cathleen is secretly meeting Paul Andrews, campaign manager for Hostetler's rival Jack Valliant.

Taggart attends an event hosted by Nicholas Hostetler for its sponsors. Here Cathleen reveals to him that she knows that he is following her on behalf of her husband. She advises Billy to stop working for Hostetler. Still, Billy Taggart finishes the job: Hostetler receives the envelope with photos Billy took of Cathleen and Andrews at a meeting in the park. Shortly thereafter, Paul Andrews is found murdered.

Captain Carl Fairbanks suspects. He thinks Billy Taggart might have something to do with Andrews' death. Taggart admits that he had taken on an assignment for Hostetler. Fairbanks and Taggart interrogate Hostetler's opponents of the election campaign for the office of New York Mayor Jack Valliant, who then reported that Andrews had contact with Todd Lancaster, the son of Hostetler's partner, entrepreneur Sam Lancaster.

Billy Taggart then meets with Hostetler's wife, Cathleen. She admits that Andrews provided her with information about Hostetler's plans for the Bolton Village Housing Project . Hostetler was therefore not primarily interested in finding Cathleen's lover. Rather, he wanted to know which informant Cathleen had used to get this sensitive information.

Billy Taggart then investigates the activities of Sam Lancaster's construction company. He discovers that Hostetler, in his capacity as mayor, sold Bolton Village to be demolished and replaced with high-priced commercial buildings. Hundreds of socially disadvantaged people would lose their homes through this deal, but Hostetler himself would benefit financially from this deal massively.

During his investigation, Taggart is caught by Hostetler's henchmen who are busy destroying evidence. He is attacked by them and almost killed in a chase. Taggart then tracks down and interrogates Todd Lancaster. Todd assures that he is against Hostetler's plans and therefore intended to give Andrews a copy of the sales contract as evidence. However, this was murdered shortly before their meeting. Now he gives Taggert a copy of the sales contract.

Taggart confronts Hostetler with these findings. Hostetler blackmailed Billy Taggart in order to silence him: he showed him the evidence that showed that he, Taggart, murdered Tavarez and not killed in self-defense. But Taggart prefers to be held accountable for the vigilante murder he committed, and has Hostetler exposed. The fact that Natalie's parents would also live in Bolton Village and lose their home contributes to his decision.

Captain Carl Fairbanks arrests Hostetler and Taggart. Taggart says goodbye to his partner Katy Bradshaw and makes arrangements with her that they will continue their detective agency as soon as he is released from custody.

Hostetler's future as a politician and mayor of New York, however, has been destroyed. The final image shows Hostetler, with his hands tied behind his back, flanked by two police officers, being led through the dense crowd of onlookers from the mayor's office to the police car. Once again he turns to his wife and says: "Don't wait for me, my love". Your answer: "Have I ever done that?"

production

Broken City was produced with a budget of 35 million US dollars, among others by the film production company Regency Enterprises and its subsidiary New Regency Productions. The thriller is distributed in the USA by 20th Century Fox and in Germany by Universum Film GmbH .

Emergence

In May 2008, Mandate Pictures bought an exposé from Tucker in order to hire a suitable director and actor later. In July of the same year Mandate of the film production company of Mr. Mudd signed a contract, which provides that the companies produce one film per year together. The first film was Broken City . In the further course of 2008, actors and staff were filled. A possible production came to a standstill. The US American Franklin Leonard , founder of The Black List , described the script as "the best, albeit unproduced, script" ("best, albeit unproduced, screenplays"). Allen Hughes and Brian Tucker met in West Hollywood in 2010 while Huges was working on the script for Broken City .

In June 2011, Emmett / Furla Films began producing the film with an expected budget of $ 60 million. Allen Hughes was found to direct. Regency Enterprises joined the project the following October . The American magazine Variety reported that Arnon Milchan Broken City would like to have produced similarly "snappy" as the films Heat and LA Confidential , whereby he appeared as a producer for the latter. The film is the first film that Hughes directs alone - before that, he always took on this role with his twin brother Albert .

criticism

“What sounds like an exciting political thriller turns out to be an absolutely unbelievable vigilante justice flick that is far from being entertaining. Perhaps lead actor Mark Wahlberg, as a producer, had his fingers on the project too much. Because director Allen Hughes ( Dead Presidents , From Hell ) only lets his class flash at the beginning. Then he gets tangled up more and more in the wild story construct and doesn't seem to notice that good pictures are not everything. Perhaps he lacks the constructive cooperation of his twin brother Albert. "

“Solid thriller that pays homage to film noir with quotations and in its staging. You can see some script weaknesses in the film given its good actors. "
