Supernova - When the sun explodes (Original title: Supernova) is an American science fiction film from 2005 with Luke Perry , Tia Carrere and Peter Fonda in the lead roles.

The scientist Dr. Austin Shepard watches the sun. He compares some data and makes a terrible discovery. He immediately leaves the research center, drives to a bank and withdraws a large sum of money, then leaves the country and is considered to have disappeared. Dr. Chris Richardson, an employee of Dr. Shepard, is supposed to represent the missing scientist at a conference. Dr. Richardson receives from Dr. Shepard received a message in which the missing scientist Dr. Richardson asks what he would do if he only had a few days left to live. The "National Intelligence Organization", represented by the agent Lisa Delgado, approaches Dr. Richardson. He should find out what was in the news that Dr. Shepard sent to some other scientists. It later emerges that Dr. Shepard corrected the current calculations of the age of the sun and found that it should soon turn into a supernova . Dr. Shepard is meanwhile in the Maldives . He begins a relationship with a waitress whom he tells that the end of the world is approaching.
Eruptions occur on the surface of the sun. The telecommunications systems are disrupted. There are some airplane disasters. The colleagues of Dr. Shepard, to whom Dr. Chris Richardson heard, are wondering if they should publish the forecast. Delgado has her arrested to avoid panic.
Serial killer Grant Cole, whom Chris Richardson's wife Brooke once convicted and who was about to be executed, escapes from prison to kill her and his daughter. Chris and several other scientists are forced by the authorities to hide in a bunker. On the way there, the helicopter in which they are flying has an accident because its on-board electronics are disrupted. Only Richardson and Delgado survive the accident. When Brooke Richardson learns of Cole's escape, she and her daughter drive to a cabin in the mountains.
Plasma clouds destroy St. Louis . Delgado, whose mother and sister live in St. Louis, and Richardson flee the bunker. They steal a car and drive across the United States. More plasma clouds destroy numerous cities and buildings such as the Taj Mahal . There is now chaos and total devastation everywhere. Several plasma clouds hit the Sahara, causing the sand to solidify into a solid mass. The plasma clouds also fall Dr. Shepard with his newfound love in the Maldives.
Chris Richardson, meanwhile, is firmly convinced that he made a mistake in his predictions. If that were the case, Dr. Shepard's prediction of an impending supernova is also wrong, because this was based on Chris' data. Together with Lisa, Richardson drives to the research laboratory, where he meets other employees and the boss there. There is also a reporter there who has been busy making the story public the whole time.
Hours pass while Chris checks his forecast and he actually finds a mistake: In one of the formulas there is a “+” instead of a “-”. This results in a completely different total, which means that Dr. Shepard was wrong and the sun is actually younger than first calculated, which in turn means that a supernova is not yet imminent. He shared this message with the reporter via the remaining television stations.
Chris wants to go back to his family with Lisa. On the streets, where chaos reigns and looted everywhere, the two are pulled out of their car. Chris is beaten up, but Lisa is able to send the attackers to flight with warning shots, but is fatally injured herself. Chris drives to his family home, where he finds blood in the kitchen and his dead housekeeper in the living room. However, Brooke left a message for Chris stating where she was. Chris sets off without realizing that Grant Cole is following him. Once in the mountains, Chris can hug his wife and daughter. When his daughter is in the bathroom, Grant Cole appears at the window and the generator fails. Chris goes armed to the generator behind the house, but is knocked down by Grant Cole, who then seizes Chris' gun. Cole enters the house where he fights the three women. He knocks Brooke's girlfriend unconscious, injures her badly and then approaches Brooke's daughter when Chris intervenes. He is almost strangled by Grant Cole before his wife Brooke shoots him.
It has been three weeks and even the biggest fires were put out by the heavy rains. "Mother Nature heals itself."

The lexicon of international films described the film as a "science fiction thriller with moderate special effects and insufficiently developed characters". The conclusion was: "Superficial entertainment." The judgment of the television magazine Prisma was similarly critical: "Here, frightening scenarios of an apocalyptic vision alternate with many improbabilities (up to complete silliness)."
The daily Der Standard called Supernova - When the Sun Explodes "a strangely hysterical film that makes you wish Luke Perry had stayed where he came from: The Snoopy in Beverly Hills 90210. "
