Fan Chuo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fan Chuo ( Chinese  樊 綽  /  樊 绰 , Pinyin Fán Chuò ; late 9th century) was a secretary in Jiedu ( Chinese  節度  /  节度 , Pinyin jié dù , a kind of province, similar to the Byzantine theme ) in Hanoi .

This province of the Chinese Tang Dynasty was on the border with Nanzhao . This gave Fan Chuo first-hand access to documents from both states. Later, after Hanoi was captured, he moved to Guangzhou . There he wrote a book called Manshu (Book of the Southern Babars), which he completed in 862 ( Chinese  蠻 書  /  蛮 书 , pinyin mánshū ). The book contains valuable information about the Nanzhao and other peoples southwest of China.
