Ronald Alfred Pickup (born June 7, 1940 in Chester , Cheshire ) is a British actor .

Life

Ronald Pickup was born in 1940 in Chester, northwest England, near the Welsh border. His parents were the editor Eric Pickup and his wife Daisy. He attended King's School in his hometown of Chester. Pickup received his acting training at the renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London .

As a stage actor, he worked with Sir Laurence Olivier at the Royal National Theater . In 1998 he was nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Amy's View . Ronald Pickup has an extensive cinematic oeuvre. In 1964 he made his first appearance in front of the camera in the first season of the television series Doctor Who . In 1982 he played Giuseppe Verdi in the multi-part series Giuseppe Verdi - An Italian Legend, which was also broadcast on German-speaking television . He also appeared in numerous other television series and feature films such as Never Say Never , The Jackal and, most recently, in 2012 in Best Exotic Marigold Hotel .

Ronald Pickup has been married to actress Lans Traverse since 1964. Their children, Simon Pickup and Rachel Pickup, are also actors.
