Location and economy

The municipality of Rijswijk is located east of The Hague and is a suburb of the Dutch royal seat. It can be reached from The Hague Central Station in a few minutes by train, but also by tram . Several highways to The Hague cross the municipality.

In Rijswijk there is an important laboratory complex of the TNO (the TNO is roughly the Dutch counterpart of the German Fraunhofer Society ) and many offices, including the CBR. The CBR (Centraal Bureau Rijvaardigheidsbewijzen = Central Office for Driving Licenses) issues driving licenses in the Netherlands and determines and organizes the tests that must be passed to obtain these documents. This authority also advises sister organizations and driving schools abroad.

Rijswijk also has a large branch of the European Patent Office with around 2,900 employees. The oil company Royal Dutch Shell has a large research and training center in Rijswijk. In addition, some Dutch ministries have moved certain departments from The Hague to Rijswijk.

history

Until about 270 a settlement of the Germanic Cananefaten or Caninefaten lay here . Around 1200 a farming village was built around a church. Four castles were built in the area, of which Te Werve was the most important.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, Rijswijk became popular with the rich and powerful from The Hague. Members of the House of Orange-Nassau , from which the Dutch royal family originated, also had a palace built here. The Peace of Rijswijk was signed on September 20, 1697 in this "House Ter Nieuwburg" . In the 18th century this mansion fell into disrepair and was eventually demolished. On the 95th anniversary of this peace, a memorial column (recently restored) was erected in 1792 in the park on the site of the former palace.

Between 1750 and 1920, Rijswijk was mainly a village of farmers who kept dairy cows. Then it became the suburb of the increasingly growing neighbor The Hague.

The painter Adrianus Zwart lived in Rijswijk in the first half of the 20th century, and his Rijswijk era is considered to be one of the last work phases from the Hague School .

Attractions

  • In the center is a church with a tower from around 1300 , with inside u. a. a beautiful organ.
  • In the old Rijswijk there are still some stately houses and villas from the 18th century .
  • The local history museum is located in one of these houses where the poet Hendrik Tollens (born in Rotterdam on September 24, 1780) died on October 21, 1856.
