Hendrik Tollens (actually Hendricus Franciscus Caroluszoon Tollens ; born September 24, 1780 in Rotterdam , † October 21, 1856 in Rijswijk ) was a Dutch writer of Flemish origin.

Life

Tollens was a businessman by profession . But when he was able to record his first successes after his debut as a writer, he withdrew from business life.

He bought an old manor house in Rijswijk and settled there as a writer. After his death, his house was converted into a museum and is still in use today. It is named Het Tollenshuis (German: The Tollens House) after its most famous resident .

As a representative of Biedermeier , Tollens was a typical folk poet of his time. Especially in his poems - which were very popular during his lifetime - he addressed virtues such as love of the country , piety , modesty and the great past of the Netherlands ( Golden Age ). From today's point of view, Tollen's poetry seems pompous and rambling.

His poem " Wien Neêrlands Bloed " was even the Dutch national anthem until 1932 . The first two lines Wien Neêrlands bloed in d'aders vloeit / Van vreemde smetten vrij… ( Eng . Whom the Netherlands has blood flowing through their veins / Free from foreign blemishes… ) were linked to the blood and soil ideas of National Socialism and were unsustainable from 1945 at the latest.

A worthy replacement was found in the song Het Wilhelmus . Philips van Marnix is presumed to be the author of this text . In addition, William I of Orange-Nassau was popular and still unforgotten.

During his lifetime Tollens was read a lot, and middle- class middle-class people liked to quote and recite them at public events . Hendrik Tollens died on October 21, 1856 in Rijswijk at the age of 76. Soon after his death, not only the work but also the "good Heinrich" was quickly forgotten.
