A Gifted Man is an American television series starring Patrick Wilson and Jennifer Ehle and conceived by Susannah Grant . It was produced from 2011 to 2012 by CBS Television Studios in collaboration with Timberman-Beverly Productions for the US broadcaster CBS . The series is about the talented but self-centered neurosurgeon Michael Holt, who receives advice on life from his late ex-wife Anna. In the US, it was first broadcast on September 23, 2011 on CBS.

action

Michael Holt is a talented but self-centered neurosurgeon in an exclusive New York hospital . He lives a comfortable and prosperous life because of the wealthy clients he treats, but is still not satisfied with himself. This life is turned upside down when he gets a visit from his ex-wife Anna, who died in a car accident two weeks ago. Anna was the director of a hospital for the poor.

As a result, Michael, as a man of science, doubts his mind. Michael's sister Christina is a single mother who cares for her troubled teenage son, Milo. She believes in the supernatural and is obsessed with the idea that Anna is back in Michael's life. When Anna asks Michael to continue running her clinic for the poor, he meets Autumn, who works there as a volunteer. Touched by the needy, Michael decides to change his attitude towards the poor and rich.

production

After Susannah Grant was able to accommodate her untitled series project at the beginning of 2011 at the station CBS , the latter also ordered the production of a pilot episode . Jonathan Demme ( The Silence of the Lambs ) was hired as Executive Producer alongside Grant . With the engagement of Patrick Wilson in the role of the protagonist Michael Holt , the casting began in mid-February 2011. In March 2011, Jennifer Ehle , Afton Williamson , Julie Benz and S. Epatha Merkerson joined the series. At the end of March 2011, however, Merkerson was replaced by Margo Martindale . Production for the pilot began in early April 2011 and ended at the end of the same month. In May 2011, the broadcaster CBS gave the series the green light and initially ordered 13 episodes. In June 2011, Pablo Schreiber was promoted to lead actor after being only featured as a guest actor in the pilot episode. At the beginning of July 2011, Rachelle Lefèvre joined the cast as Kate Sykora .

Although the audience's ratings for the series have been relatively low since the first episode, CBS commissioned three more episodes for the series in November 2011. The series was canceled on May 10, 2012.

Charisma

United States

After A Gifted Man received the series order in May 2011, a series start for September 23, 2011 was called. When it premiered, the series reached 9.45 million viewers and a rating of 1.4 among the advertising-relevant target group . With these numbers, which fell to 8.18 million viewers in the second week and a rating of 1.2, the series was considered to be at risk of discontinuation quite early on. Although the ratings got slightly better over time, the fact that A Gifted Man was still the worst series in the CBS program remained unchanged. The first season finale, which is also the series finale, was broadcast on March 2, 2012.

Germany

ProSiebenSat.1 Media had secured the German broadcasting rights, where it was broadcast on Kabel Eins from September 21, 2012 . After eleven episodes broadcast, Kabel Eins stopped broadcasting early because there were too few viewers. On January 8, 2014, the pay TV channel FOX began broadcasting the series. From February 12 to 26, 2014, he also showed the five missing episodes.

reception

At Metacritic , the series has a Metascore of 62/100 based on 19 reviews. During an early review of the pilot episode, HitFix critic Daniel Fienberg praised the cast and Demme's directing, although he doubted the series would still be this good without Demme and that the plot could become predictable. David Hinckley of the New York Daily News gave the series three stars out of five and said that “the entire cast here would play their roles very well, from Wilson to supporting cast like Emmy winner Margo Martindale as his loyal assistant, Rita. Ehle has a slightly tougher role, but does well at it. It's a series that wants to say something. Now she needs viewers who want to hear that ”. The Los Angeles Times critic Mary McNamara said that "could be the series with a few small changes intelligently satirical comedy, but they do not think that's what Grant had in mind to create" and joked while on the cosmic Beliefs and the broken family of Julie Benz 'character. In the Boston Globe , Matthew Gilbert compared the series to Grey's Anatomy , adding that “[the series] must overcome the limited and overused construct in order to portray the characters free from endless debates about whether or not Anna is real. Let the actors find the drama in more earthly concerns. I think they are ready for that ”.

The series also attracted attention from the film award critics, for example A Gifted Man was nominated as Best Network Television Series at the Saturn Awards 2012 and as Favorite New TV Drama at the People's Choice Awards 2012 . Actor Austin Williams was also nominated at the Young Artist Awards 2012 for his guest role in the episode In Case of Exposure (Season 1, Episode 7) in the category Best Guest Actor in a TV Series - Between 14 and 17 Years .
