Rudolf Fellmann

Rudolf Fellmann (born September 20, 1925 in Basel ; † August 28, 2013 ) was a Swiss provincial Roman archaeologist .

After attending the humanistic grammar school in Basel, Rudolf Fellmann studied classical philology and history at the University of Basel from 1944 to 1950 . In 1955 he received his doctorate there with the dissertation Basel in Roman times . Two years later he contributed a work on the tomb of the colony founder Lucius Munatius Plancus for the 2000th anniversary of Colonia Raurica . After graduating, he taught ancient languages and history at the Kohlenberg-Gymnasium Basel for several years . Fellmann completed his habilitation in 1975 at the University of Freiburg and in 1977 at the University of Bern Associate Professor of Roman Provincial Archeology. In 1990 he retired . Outside Switzerland, he took part in excavations at the Baalschamin shrine in Palmyra from 1954 to 1956 . In two publications he presented the early grave complex and the lamps and stucco work of the complex. From the founding in 1970 to 1995 he was an editor , after which he was a member of the scientific advisory board of the magazine Antike Welt for several years . Fellmann died on August 28, 2013 as a result of a serious illness.

In his research, Fellmann stood between provincial Roman and classical archeology . He dealt in particular with the Roman remains in Switzerland and with military history . His book The Romans in Switzerland (1988), written with Walter Drack , is considered a standard work. Fellmann was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
