Blue Car - Poetry of Summer (Original title: Blue Car ) is an American drama from 2002 . Karen Moncrieff directed and wrote the screenplay.

Complete plot

The father of 18-year-old Megan Denning is leaving the family. His child support payments often fail, which puts Megan's mother in financial difficulties. Megan's younger sister Lily is mentally unbalanced; she starves in the hope of becoming an angel. Lily is rushed to a hospital where she jumps out of a window and tries to fly. She dies in the process.

Megan befriends her English teacher, who is writing a novel. He persuades her to take part in a competition for young poets. Megan sleeps with the teacher, who later disappoints her. In the end she moves in with her father.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was a "sensitive, emotionally played drama about adolescence, loneliness and self-discovery" . It is "effectively staged" and includes "well-developed characters" . Bruckner plays the main role "hauntingly between helplessness and vulnerability" .

Kenneth Turan wrote in the Los Angeles Times on May 2, 2003 that the film had some weaknesses such as the schematic plot, which included "melodramatic turns" . Nevertheless, it is an "intimate, contemplative drama" with "unforgettable depictions" .

Awards

Karen Moncrieff received a Woodstock Film Festival award in 2002 and was nominated for the Grand Prix des Amériques of the World Film Festival and for his special award for the American Film Festival in Deauville . Agnes Bruckner as the leading actress and Karen Moncrieff as the screenwriter were nominated for the Independent Spirit Award in 2004.
