Soul Men is an American comedy film from the year 2008 . It was the last film by Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes , who both died independently within one day, namely on August 9 and 10, 2008.

action

The soul band Marcus Hooks & The Real Deal had an extremely successful period from 1972 to 1977. However, lead singer Markus Hooks decides to start a solo career at Madison Square Garden . What remains is The Real Deal, consisting of Louis Hinds and Floyd Henderson, who both continued to perform until 1979 and then fell out. After 30 years, Marcus Hooks dies of a heart attack in Sweden and is to be honored with a farewell gala of his old companions in the Apollo Theater in New York City . That's reason enough for Floyd, who is retired after transferring his dealership to his nephew, to see Louis and propose to perform at Marcus' funeral for $ 40,000. Because with that you could maybe get a new record deal.

Both set off for New York with their “Mothership” car (“MOTHASHP” according to the license plate). On the way, they perform smaller gigs, with old hostilities returning after the first gig. Floyd had once slept with Louis' wife, whereupon she divorced him and married Floyd. At least the second gig in Amarillo , Texas , went a lot better, so that both of them spend a night of love with fans. But then they have so little money that they cannot even afford gas for the rest of the journey. So they go to Tulsa , Oklahoma , where they suspect Odetta. Instead, however, they meet their daughter Cleo, who informs them that Odetta has long since passed away. Unfortunately, she lives with wannabe rapper Lester, who not only takes advantage of her, but also beats her. Louis and Floyd drive him away and take Cleo to Memphis, where she is allowed to perform together with the two of them in the "House of Soul".

But Lester does not put up with this humiliation, which is why he follows the three to Memphis and wants to take revenge on them in front of their hotel. Instead, he is only run over by Floyd. The police appear at the scene and arrest everyone. Only when eyewitnesses confirm that they were acting in self-defense , Floyd is allowed to leave. Unfortunately, Louis has to remain in prison for violating his probation requirements. So that they both get to New York in time, Floyd frees him and flees from the police to the VH1 show, which is recording Hook's Abdjid's gala. Arrived at the Apollo, Floyd and Louis hide in Hook's coffin, which is driven onto the stage and opened. Since neither of them seems to be able to escape, they go on stage and play their biggest hit together. Thereupon both are arrested and are allowed to start their new comeback with Cloe as a singer after a short imprisonment due to good conduct.

background

The film opened in the United States on November 7, 2008, and with an estimated budget of $ 40 million, it was only able to rake in only $ 12.3 million at the box office. In Germany, the film was only released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on May 23, 2011 .

criticism

"Comedy with a lot of soul music and a few swipes at show business that clearly suffers from the weak main actors."

"Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac, who died much too early, shine in this atmospherically tightly staged fun as an unequal, eternally divided background singer duo, who in the end still pulls together."

German production

The German version was produced by TV + Synchron Berlin .
