action

Adolescent Agent 83 has been at Prescott Academy, an institute that trains agents for the government, from birth. She neither knows her parents nor everyday life. Agent 83 develops an interest in life outside of the academy over time. Despite her excellent work, she dreams of a normal life. She secretly begins to read youth magazines and watches teen films like Girls Club - be careful! , Girls United or Beverly Hills, 90210 . Her mentor Hardman keeps telling the agents not to build ties.

Agent 83's latest assignment takes them to Chechnya . There she is supposed to arrest the arms dealer Victoria Knox. Undercover she lets Knox take her hostage and manages to take her captive. But Knox pulls a gun and aims at Agent 83. The latter saves himself by jumping into a river. When Hardman calls her, Agent 83 makes the decision to fake her death. She goes into hiding and wants to lead a normal teenage life. As an exchange student Megan Walsh, she is staying with Mrs. Larson and her children Liz and Parker. Parker immediately takes a liking to Megan, while Liz is cold and aloof with her. But Megan quickly realizes that teenage life is not that easy. She embarrassed herself with her outfit on the first day of school, is mocked by the other students at a meeting, which embarrasses both Megan and Liz. Through this, she meets the computer geek Roger Marcus, who immediately shows interest in her, although Megan has an eye on the school crush and singer Cash Fenton. When she discovers she is in the same biology class with Cash, she hacks into the school system to make him her lab partner. As a result, she attracts the hatred of the other girls. They advise Megan to apply for the school mascot, since it seems to have cash on it. Since she is the only contender, Megan gets the role. During a game, a couple of students from a rival school come out and try to kidnap Megan as a mascot. She attacks her attacker and the other students film what is happening. Megan then learns that the kidnapping is part of an annual tradition. The video goes online and it has given Megan some popularity. This annoys Liz, who gives her to understand that she will not buy the role of the exchange student from her.

Megan spends more time on cash. One day when she is about to go home, she is arrested by a Prescott analyst and taken back to Hardman. Hardman believes Megan is a double agent and doesn't believe that she wants to lead a normal life. After receiving a truth serum from him, Megan confirms it again. Hardman lets her go, but warns that if she gets in trouble the academy won't be there to bail her out. Cash invites Megan to Gooch's house party. Mrs. Larson asks her daughter Liz to go with Megan. At the party, Megan and Cash get closer, while Liz gets to know the drunken Gooch better. To Megan's surprise, she meets her Academy rival, Agent 84, now called Heather, at the party. It turns out that Hardman sent Heather to keep an eye on Megan. Since Heather also has her eye on Cash, the two girls fight for his attention. Megan is invited to the prom by Cash at the end of the party. The next morning, Megan is about to take the bus when Hardman stands in front of her and tells her that Victoria Knox has escaped from Prescott. Liz drives Megan to school, but they are followed by a masked person who shoots the two of them. During the chase, Megan confesses the truth to Liz. They can park the enemy car in a junkyard, but the masked person has fled. Megan examines the car and smells Heather's perfume. After a phone call with Hardman, it is revealed that Heather Victoria Knox helped with the outbreak and that she is a double agent.

Liz was hospitalized after the accident. Megan tells her that she wants to leave the Larson family so that no one will endanger him. Liz, however, does not want that and talks her out of the plan. They slowly become friends and go to the school ball together. There Megan realizes that Cash is a boring boy and that she actually loves Roger. When she tries to admit that, Roger's date Heather shows up. She provokes Megan and the two start a fight. Heather chases Megan down the school hallways. Heather brags about taking cash and then Roger after Megan's destruction. Meanwhile, Liz sneaks up to Heather and stabs her in the leg with a corn dog skewer. Megan then knocks her out. Megan and Liz return home, where they are already expected by Victoria Knox, who have captured Mrs. Larson and Parker. Knox explains to Megan that she was Agent 1 in Prescott, but was left behind by Hardman and has therefore taken the other side. Hardman arrives with his charges and arrests Knox again. Megan takes the Prescott helicopter to show her love for Roger.

In the credits you see Heather sitting in a car with one of Knox's protégés. She stares at a photo of Megan and orders him to find out which college Megan will go to.

Reviews

The film received mixed to negative reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , only 26% of the reviews are positive out of a total of 35 reviews; the average rating is 4.26 / 10.

"This far from groundbreaking high school actioner gets away with his charm and sense of fun."

- Empire UK

"Instead of deconstructing the youthful experience through the eyes of a deadly heroine who knows how to hurt others, the film becomes disappointingly harmless and hits the conventional notch like so many forgettable youth comedies before her."

- Slant Magazine

"There are some funny moments and Steinfeld has a winning presence, but a film like this just has to have a higher density of gags and funny observations."
