The release of the second season took place on April 24, 2019. In May 2019, YouTube announced a third season to be released in 2020. Producer Sony is also negotiating a fourth season with Netflix.

action

34 years have passed since the All Valley karate tournament final . Johnny Lawrence faces the ruins of his life. Divorced and with a young son with whom he has hardly any contact, he gets through life more badly than well with handicrafts and caretaker jobs. When a wealthy customer feels offended by him, he also loses this job. In fact, he never really coped with the defeat in the final at that time due to LaRusso's illegal kick and the subsequent humiliation of his coach at the time, and now lives mainly on beer and expired food.

Daniel LaRusso, on the other hand, turned into a successful car dealer and manager of several branches. As a result, he achieved considerable prosperity and still flirts with a karate image in public . However, he worries about his disinterested son and daughter, with whom he fears that they will be forgiven for a “rich brat”.

In the evening in a supermarket, Johnny meets the teenager Miguel, who recently moved to the same, shabby housing estate with his mother and grandmother. He is bullied and beaten by a group of high school classmates until Johnny intervenes. The group's anger is now directed at him and together they attack Johnny. With his karate skills, however, he defends himself and strikes them all down, but is then arrested by the police. Miguel is so impressed that he then asks Johnny to teach him, but this refuses.

Johnny ponders what happened to him, how it got there. Then his old Pontiac is demolished by the car of a group of high school students, including Daniel's daughter, as he later learns, who then hit the road. To his displeasure, the tow company brought the damaged car to one of LaRusso's workshops, of all places. Johnny always felt provoked by LaRusso's commercials and posters, now he has to pick up his car in his shop, of all places. When he tries to get this over with quickly, he is recognized by Daniel and spoken to. After many years, the two meet again. Daniel pretends to be friendly, but is also condescending and arrogant towards Johnny.

The desire for change matures in Johnny. With the money he received from his stepfather, who wanted to buy himself free of all other obligations, he rents empty shop space and, realizing that karate is the only thing he masters and out of defiance to LaRusso, opens the Cobra Kai Dojo new, with Miguel as his first student. At first, however, he was troubled by the “newfangled” hygiene and safety regulations. A kind of friendship develops between him and the fatherless Miguel. Johnny explains current technology to Johnny, while Johnny brings him closer to the rock and metal of the 80s. There is sometimes friction between the two, for example due to Johnny's lack of political correctness, but above all he encourages Miguel to be more courageous, self-confident and defensible towards his captors.

When Daniel learns of the existence of the new Cobra Kai, he reacts with horror. Also because it uses the same snake logo, the same black uniforms and the same motto (“Strike first, strike hard, no mercy”). He fears that Johnny will breed a new generation of thugs there. In fact, the dojo is primarily a meeting point for outsiders and victims of bullying, who encounter solidarity and camaraderie there. Johnny would like to help the current "soft generation" on the jumps. The old rivalry flares up again between Johnny and Daniel. But Daniel has to realize that this time his daughter's circle of friends may play the role of villain. Unaware that this is Johnny's son, he also takes care of the problem child Robby, to whom he brings the philosophy of Miyagi, his old, long-dead master closer.

reception

After the release, Cobra Kai was received very positively. The series has a rating of 100% at Rotten Tomatoes , based on 32 reviews. Marco Engelien describes Cobra Kai on curved.de as "the best series that you will not watch" (based on the initial unavailability in Europe). James Rolfe describes the series as "brilliant" and sees Johnny Lawrence, or William Zabka, as the protagonist of the series, whereby he praises the fact that he still has its rough edges and thus acts more as an antihero . He also praised the fact that the series made fun of contemporary issues such as “cultural sensitivity”, “gender equality” and political correctness.

Awards

In 2018 Cobra Kai was nominated as the first YouTube Red series for an Emmy in the category "Best stunt coordination for a comedy series". With this single nomination, however, YouTube Red director Susanne Daniels was dissatisfied, as the series "deserved a lot more".
