history

Horticulture began in 1972, with the first greenhouses being completed in 1982. Further greenhouses were built in 1993. The outdoor area was redesigned and planted in 1997.

collection

Today the garden has around 1400 species . In German-speaking countries, the botanical garden is known for its extensive collection of wild herbs from the fields, vineyards and ruderal areas . Around 400 species are attracted every year, including many tribes that have already largely disappeared in the landscape. In addition, there are conservation cultures of rare species in the Lake Constance region , especially the Lake Constance beach lawn and the reed meadows . The aim is to secure the local populations.

Rare species from the Lake Region include Anacamptis coriophora , Armeria purpurea (Lake Constance clan) , Blysmus compressus , Deschampsia rhenana , nasturtiifolium Erucastrum , Globularia punctata , Gratiola officinalis , Littorella uniflora , Myosotis rehsteineri , Ranunculus reptans and Samolus valerandi .

The open area also includes extensive research areas for the Chair of Plant Ecology, where invasion biological issues are investigated, as well as a plant systematic department for teaching, a marsh plant collection and Mediterranean potted plants. The staff also maintains two nature trails on forest ecology and invasion biology.

The greenhouses contain a collection of tropical crops, plants with special animal-plant relationships, invasive plants of the tropics and a plot with examples of important botanical terms. The collection also includes a succulent house , as well as a cold house in which Canarian plants, carnivorous plants and rare conifers from the southern hemisphere are housed.

research

The botanical garden is primarily used for research and teaching: the plant physiology department works primarily with Arabidopsis thaliana , the plant ecology department works with large sets of invasive and non-invasive plants. Various courses and exercises take place in the garden.
