Supía is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Caldas in Colombia .

geography

Supía is located in the northwest of Caldas in the sub-region Alto Occidente , 77 km from Manizales , and has an average temperature of 28 ° C. The community is located at 1183 meters on the Río Supía in the western cordillera of the Colombian Andes . The municipality borders Caramanta in the department of Antioquia in the north, Marmato and La Merced in the east and Riosucio in the south and west .

Demographics

The municipality of Supía has 27,489 inhabitants, of whom 13,463 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Supía goes back to pre-colonial settlements of the Sopías . In the history of the community, indigenous elements from pre-Hispanic times, Spanish elements and also African elements, who came to Supía through slaves who had to work in mines, play a role. The current population of the municipality is accordingly mixed.
