Villa Maria is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Caldas in Colombia .
geography
Villamaría is located in Caldas in the Centro Sur sub-region , 4 km south of Manizales , at an altitude of 1920 m above sea level. NN . The municipality borders on Manizales to the north, Chinchiná and Santa Rosa de Cabal in Risaralda to the west, Herveo and Murillo in Tolima to the east and Santa Rosa de Cabal to the south.

The municipality of Villamaría has 60,729 inhabitants, of which 50,841 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).
history
Before the arrival of the Spaniards, indigenous peoples lived in what is now Villamaría . However, these disappeared due to the conquest and various volcanic eruptions, so that the area was uninhabited until the 19th century. It was not repopulated until 1834 as part of the antioquic colonization ( Colonización Antioqueña ). The place Villamaría was officially founded in 1852.
economy
Mining has traditionally been the main industry in Villamaría. Today agriculture plays the most important role, especially the cultivation of coffee . There is also timber industry . After Manizales, Villamaría is the most industrialized city in Caldas.
