Samana is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Caldas in Colombia .

geography

Samaná is located in the east of Caldas in the Alto Oriente sub-region , 189 km from Manizales , and has an average temperature of 20 ° C. The community is located at 1460 meters. The municipality borders in the north and northeast Nariño and Argelia in the Departamento de Antioquia , in the east Victoria and Norcasia , in the south Marquetalia and Victoria and in the west Pensilvania and Nariño.

Demographics

The municipality of Samaná has 25,798 inhabitants, of whom 5,192 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

When the Spaniards arrived, the Pantágoras, an indigenous people who were exterminated during the Conquest, lived in the area of ​​today's Samaná . As a result, the area was uninhabited for 300 years. Pensilvania was founded in 1860 by settlers from Antioquia as San Agustín . The place received the status of a municipality in 1896. The community was renamed Samaná in 1930 to provide more direct links with the region's indigenous roots.
