Aguadas is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Caldas in Colombia .

geography

Aguadas is located north of Caldas in the Norte sub-region , 126 km from Manizales , and has an average temperature of 17 ° C. The community is located at 2214 meters in the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes . La Pintada , Abejorral and Sonsón in the Departamento de Antioquia border the municipality in the north , Sonsón, Salamina and Pensilvania in the east, Pácora and Salamina in the south and Caramanta and Valparaíso in Antioquia in the west .

Demographics

The municipality of Aguadas has 21,237 inhabitants, of which 11,783 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

When the Spaniards arrived, the indigenous people of the Concuyes lived in what is now Aguadas . Due to the rich gold deposits in the region, many Spaniards settled in the region and founded the city of Santiago de Arma . However, the city was abandoned in 1777 when the mines were exhausted and re-established on the site of today's Rionegro . However, some settlers stayed and finally founded today's Aguadas in 1808 under the name La Aguada . The name was changed to Aguadas as early as 1810 to 1812.

economy

The main industries of Aguadas are the cultivation of coffee and other agricultural products ( bananas and sugar cane ) as well as animal husbandry and handicrafts (especially hats). A local specialty is the Pionono sweet made in Aguadas.

Attractions

The historic center of Aguadas was declared a national cultural heritage of Colombia in 1982 . Sights include Calle de los Faroles , a steep pedestrian street of historical and cultural importance, Pueblito Viejo , a replica of the original village, and the Francisco Giraldo cultural center . There are also petroglyphs , waterfalls and a hill overlooking the town nearby .
