Altos is a city and district in the Cordillera Department near Lake Ypacaraí in Paraguay , 50 km from Asunción . Due to its elevated position, it offers a magnificent view over the lake. Altos is therefore often referred to as the “terrace of the country”. It is one of the oldest places in Paraguay. The district has about 14,500 inhabitants.

history

The place was founded in 1538 by Domingo Martínez de Irala . In 1580 the Franciscan Luis de Bolaños built the first Indio-Reduction of Paraguay and the Río de la Plata region there. He settled about 1000-1500 Guaranís including the children. In 1616, Hernando Arias de Saavedra had land distributed to the Indians for the first time in order to win them over for cattle breeding.

After the Triple Alliance War (1864-1870), the Paraguayan government tried to compensate for the loss of population caused by immigrants from Europe. In 1879 the first contingents of German immigrants came to Altos. In 1882 the first lessons in German were held for the children of the immigrants, and in 1888 the first German school opened in Paraguay. The first German shooting and sports club was founded in 1893.

In 1945 all goods belonging to German society were confiscated by the state and all activities within their facilities were prohibited. On the occasion of President Federico Chávez's visit to Altos in 1952, the settlers asked for the goods to be returned to German society. This was granted by decree on November 17, 1952.

Between 1959 and 1960, Dr. Josef Mengele hid in Altos after the German government had identified his home in Buenos Aires , in order to then flee to Hohenau (Paraguay) .
