Chinchiná is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Caldas , Colombia , located in the Eje Cafetero the Central Cordillera of the Andes .

Chinchiná is located 23 kilometers southwest of the capital of Caldas, Manizales . Chinchiná is one of the typical cities in the coffee region of Colombia and offers tourists a unique mountain landscape. The still active volcano Nevado del Ruiz is 30 kilometers to the east .

Chinchiná is located in the south of Caldas at an altitude of 1378 meters. The annual average temperature is 21 ° C. Chinchiná is 23 km southwest of Manizales . The municipality borders Palestina and Risaralda in the north, Villamaría and Manizales in the east, Santa Rosa de Cabal in Risaralda in the south and Marsella in Risaralda and Belalcázar in the west .

The municipality of Chinchiná has 50,673 inhabitants, of which 45,917 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The place was founded in 1857 during the colonizacón antioqueña (migration movement from Antioquia ). Candelario Rodriguez, Gregorio and Francisco Restrepo are mentioned as some of the first settlers. The original name of the place was San Francisco . Later the Indian name Chinchiná was adopted.

economy

The city is known as the main region of Colombian highland coffee , it is the seat of the Buendía coffee factory and the coffee research institute Cenicafé . Chinchiná is located in a mountain valley with 112.4 km extension, which is surrounded by numerous coffee plantations . The local coffee quality is one of the best in the world due to the favorable climate. The coffee cultivation around Chinchiná is characterized by a high degree of technological progress. The Chinchiná coffee culture landscape has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011 .

Hydroelectric works and dams in the area around Chinchiná supply the departments of Caldas , Quindío and Risaralda with energy.

Chinchiná is located on a strategically important traffic junction between Pereira and Manizales in central Colombia, which promotes trade and industry and ensures high land prices. Lately there have been efforts to promote ecotourism . Old coffee fincas and haciendas are being converted into hotels in order to promote ecologically appropriate tourism in the mountain region in harmony with traditional coffee cultivation.

In the river valley of the Río Chinchiná , the PROCUENCA project is being carried out in the municipalities of Neira , Manizales , Palestina and Villamaría , which takes into account an ecologically stable forest use while ensuring the socio-economic aspects of the region.
