Marsella is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Risaralda in Colombia .

geography

Marsella is located in the Departamento de Risaralda in the Colombian coffee zone (Eje Cafetero) 30 km from Pereira at an altitude of 1575 meters. Marsella is located in the Colombian Andes in the area between the Río Cauca and the Río San Francisco . The municipality borders in the north on Belalcázar and Chinchiná in the Departamento de Caldas , in the east on Chinchiná and Santa Rosa de Cabal , in the south on Pereira and Dosquebradas and in the west on Belalcázar and La Virginia .

The municipality of Marsella has 24,131 inhabitants, of which 14,107 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the area of present-day Marsella was inhabited by the indigenous peoples of the Quimbaya . The present-day place was founded in 1860 during the settlement of the region by settlers from Antioquia .

economy

The main industries of Marsella are agriculture (in particular coffee , bananas , avocados , citrus fruits and ornamentals are grown) and, to a lesser extent, cattle production .
