Quinchía is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Risaralda in Colombia .

geography

Quinchía is located in the northeast of Risaralda in the Colombian coffee zone (Eje Cafetero) , 110 km from Pereira , at an altitude of 1830 m above sea level. NN and has an average annual temperature of about 18 ° C. The municipality borders on Riosucio to the north, Anserma to the south and Filadelfia and Neira to the east , all in the Departamento de Caldas and to the west on Guática in Risaralda.

history

Quinchía Viejo

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the area of today's Quinchía was inhabited by the indigenous peoples of the Guaqueramaes and Tapascos of the Ansermas and Irra families and was named Guacuma . Franciscans founded the Anserma monastery in 1572, near which the town of Quinchía Viejo was built. Today's Quinchía was founded in 1888. In the course of the re-establishment, the old place disappeared completely. Quinchía received parish status in 1919.

The main industry in Quinchía is agriculture , especially coffee . But bananas , cassava and sugar cane are also grown. The mining of gold and coal also play an important role.
